VIDEO: Stonewall Dems President Alex Mohajer Opposes Huntington Beach Ordinance Banning LGBTQ+ Pride Flag

February 8, 2023

Stonewall Dems President Alex Mohajer appeared before the Huntington Beach City Council during its regular meeting on February 7th to oppose an ordinance being introduced by Councilmember Pat Burns that would effectively ban the LGBTQ+ pride flag from city property, including during Pride month in June.

Mohajer spoke about his experience as a gay man and the long lineage of LGBTQ+ activists who fought and died in order to advance the rights of his community.  Despite hours of public comment by members of the community who opposed the ordinance, it was passed 4-3 by the Council’s new conservative majority.

CBS News covered Mohajer and the event. You can catch that coverage here.

WATCH:

@stonewalldemocrats Stonewall President @amohajer was there to give public comment last night along with Stonewall members. We listened as person after person got up and opened up their hearts and pleaded with the council members. 246 community members in total opened their hearts and asked the Huntington Beach Council Representitives to keep the Pride flag up through pride month, rather than taking it down as had been proposed. Mayor Tony Strickland, Mayor Pro Tem Gracey Van Der Mark, Councilmember Pat Burns, and Councilmember Casey McKeon all voted to remove the Pride flag from City Hall. They will be removing the flag. This is not a small act. This is a clear move to make Huntington Beach a less welcoming and supportive city for the LGBTQIA+ community. #pride #lgbtqia🏳️‍🌈 ♬ original sound – Stonewall Dems
