IRVINE, CA – Today, 38-year-old Iranian Irvine native and LGBTQ+ civic leader Alex Mohajer announced his historic campaign for the California State Senate in the 37th Senate District, representing parts of Irvine, Orange, Tustin, Fullerton, Costa Mesa, Lake Forest, Aliso Niguel, and Laguna Niguel.
If elected, he will be the only Iranian in the California state legislature, one of its youngest members, the first openly gay legislator elected from Orange County, and one of the first openly gay Iranians elected anywhere in the world.
Mohajer attended Irvine K-12 public schools and community college before attending UC Berkeley for his undergraduate education. He returned to the district to attend Chapman University School of Law, where he graduated with a J.D. in 2011. For the past 10 years, he has been working in public service, trying due process hearings and investigating allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination as a Civil Service Advocate for the County of Los Angeles.
Mohajer is a lifelong LGBTQ+ activist and civic leader, and in 2021 he was elected President of the Stonewall Democrats, one of the nation’s oldest LGBTQ+ political advocacy organizations.
Mohajer is running on a platform of economic dignity for working-class families, healthcare access and mental health resources for all Californians, and bold climate change action. He has pledged to not take any campaign contributions from fossil fuel and corporate health lobbies.
“We can’t rely on a gridlocked Congress to move fast enough to meet our current climate crisis,” said Mohajer in a statement. “We need a new generation of independent leadership, elected from our communities, to make sure we get the job done.”
Mohajer also said he will serve as an unabashed advocate for marginalized communities, vowing to take the fight for a free Iran and for LGBTQ+ rights to Sacramento.
The movement for the liberation of oppressed people is intersectional and nonpartisan. I vow to take the fight for a free Iran to Sacramento, and will always advocate for marginalized communities here at home.
