The leading gun safety group has offered the Orange County, CA native their priority endorsement in the 37th State Senate district
Safer CA, one of the leading gun safety groups in the state of California, announced on Thursday that they are offering their priority endorsement to Democrat Alex Mohajer for California State Senate. Mohajer is running for Orange County’s 37th Senate District.
“Alex Mohajer will be a champion for gun safety and the marginalized communities that gun violence adversely impacts,” said Safer CA Chair Max Coston in a statement. “We need new, progressive leaders that understand these communities, which is why we are proud to offer him our priority endorsement for CA State Senate.”
Safer California was founded in 2022 and is the first gun safety PAC in California not attached to national organizations. Their mission is to “identify, support, and elect gun safety candidates who will champion robust gun reforms from school boards to Congress” and that “are representative of their communities and have their best interests in mind.”
38-year-old Iranian Irvine native and LGBTQ+ civic leader Alex Mohajer announced in March that he would be vying for the seat currently held by Senator Dave Min, who is running for Congress. Earlier this month, Mohajer announced that he had raised more than $117,000 in his first fundraising quarter and had pledged to accept no contributions from corporate PACs, corporate healthcare lobbies, or the fossil fuels industry.
Mohajer’s historic campaign has already garnered national attention. Last month, he was named one of the 2023 #Pride50, honored as one of the most inspirational LGBTQ+ voices in the country. If elected, Mohajer will become the first openly gay Iranian man elected anywhere in the world, the only Iranian in the California state legislature, and the first openly LGBTQ+ legislator elected from Orange County. He will also be considerably younger than the average of California state legislators. He has centered his campaign on climate change, health care, mental health, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and economic policies that lift up working class families.
